Compact Lyman-α Emitting Candidates at z ≃ 2.4 in Deep Medium-band HST WFPC2 Images

چکیده
Medium-band imaging with HST/WFPC2 in the F410M filter has previously revealed a population of compact Lyman-α emission objects around the radio galaxy 53W002 at z ≃ 2.4. We report detections of similar objects at z ≃ 2.4 in random, high-latitude HST parallel observations of three additional fields, lending support to the idea that they constitute a widespread population at these redshifts. The three new fields contain 18 Lyman-α candidates, in contrast to the 17 detected in the deeper exposure of the single WFPC2 field around 53W002. We find substantial differences in the number of candidates from field to field, suggesting that significant large-scale structure is already present in the galaxy distribution at this cosmic epoch. The likely existence of z ≃ 2.4 sub-galactic clumps in several random fields shows that these objects may have been common in the early universe and strengthens the argument that such objects may be responsible for the formation of a fraction of the luminous present-day galaxies through hierarchical merging. Subject headings: galaxies: evolution—galaxies: formation—cosmology: largescale structure of universe Based on observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by AURA, Inc., under NASA Contract NAS 5-26555.

A Keck Survey for Gravitationally-lensed Lyman Α Emitters in the Redshift Range 8.5<z<10.4: New Constraints on the Contribution of Low Luminosity Sources to Cosmic Reionization
We discuss new observational constraints on the abundance of faint high redshift Lyman-α emitters secured from a deep Keck near-infrared spectroscopic survey which utilizes the strong magnification provided by lensing galaxy clusters at intermediate redshift (z = 0.2 − 0.5). In each of 9 clusters we have undertaken a systematic ‘blind’ search for line emission with NIRSPEC in the J-band within ...
متن کاملH α emitting galaxies and the cosmic star formation rate at z ' 2 . 2 ?
An infrared imaging survey in narrow band filters around 2.1 μm has yielded ∼ 10 candidate Hα emitting galaxies at z ' 2.2 of which 6 have been subsequently confirmed spectroscopically with ISAAC at the ESO VLT. The survey reached a limiting line flux of ∼ 5x10−17 erg cm−2 s−1 and covered 100 arcmin2 including the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) WFPC2 and STIS fields. This is the largest spectro...
متن کاملConstraints to the evolution of Ly - α bright galaxies between z = 3 and z = 6 ⋆
Galaxies at high redshift with a strong Ly-α emission line trace massive star formation in the absence of dust, and can therefore be regarded as a prime signature of the first major starburst in galaxies. We report results of the Ly-α search within the Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS). With imaging FabryPerot interferometer CADIS can detect emission lines in three waveband windows free of...
متن کاملHst Imaging and Keck Spectroscopy of Z ≈ 6 I-band Drop-out Galaxies in the Acs Goods Fields
We measure the surface density of i-band dropout galaxies at z ∼ 6 through wide-field HST/ACS imaging and ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy. Using deep HST ACS SDSS-i (F775W) and SDSS-z (F850LP) imaging from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N; 200 arcmin), we identify 9 i-dropouts satisfying an (i − z)AB > 1.5 selection criterion to a depth of z AB = 25.6 (correspondin...
متن کاملHST Images of Stephan’s Quintet: Star Cluster Candidates in a Compact Group Environment
We present HST WFPC2 images of Stephan’s Quintet which encompass three interacting galaxies and their associated tidal features. These deep, three-color (B,V, I) images indicate recent, massive stellar system formation in various regions within the compact group environment. We have identified star cluster candidates (SCC) both within the interacting galaxies and in the tidal debris. We compare...
